The Big Ride Day 7 Surat Thani to Khao Sok
Day 7. 106kms. The hills. We turned inland to cross through Kao Sok National park. The tour company had found a new route just out of Surat Thani that took us through more back roads than previous rides, avoiding the highway and a few hills. The back roads are generally a mix of concrete and dirt. There are more potholes and rough patches, but also more shade from trees, less traffic and better scenery.
The 25km stretch to lunch was back on the highway and through few towns. We had a spontaneous police escort for some of the way with pointsmen jumping out at intersections to wave us through. Very Tour de France. The hills weren't necessarily that big but constant as we start to climb into the National Park. A fantastic lunch set us up for the next 25kms in the Park proper. Great scenery - looming limestone hills and rainforest.....and hills to ride up. Last stop a few kms before the end at a limestone cave to feed the tame fish. Ken had a spectacular crash coming in when h braked too heavily for a judder bar and did a complete 360.
Last night on the ride spent at the beautiful Khao Sok River Cliff Bungalows. Beers in the pool.....contemplating tomorrow the last day of the ride.
