Day 2 HATW Northern Bike Ride - Pak Khat to Bueng Kan (GPS link attached)

Day 2 was a short riding day (64kms) once again roughly following the Mekong River along the Laos border. The day begin with a bit of a chill in the air by Thai standards and the odd jacket or extra top was spotted at 6:30 am breakfast. By lunchtime there was some real heat, perhaps a sign of things to come as we follow the river south from hereon towards Yasothon. I had bar ends fitted to my handlebars today which have helped the wrist. Still hate those potholes though!

We finished up at the hotel at 1pm and in the afternoon  took a van ride to a nearby mountain to climb 400 metres up very step wooden steps for spectacular views from the top. The bravest walked 800 metres around a narrow rickety boardwalk attached to the top of the mountain. I made about 50 metres before my uncomfortableness with (aka fear off) heights forced a retreat. I was in good company however. The day took an eventful turn with the collapse of an elderly monk on the steep steps. Several riders performed CPR and mouth to mouth and saw him down the mountain to ambulance and hospital.

Tomorrow the long days start - all 100kms + from here......
